One day, the sky goes completely dark. Purple-skinned elves - claiming to hail from a hidden "Violet Kingdom" - appear and lead the party to this kingdom, where they claim they will be safe.
The party reaches this kingdom, where they see a terrified man killed by archers before their eyes. Their escorts are killed as well, and the archers vanish. The party finds a magic ring on the first man's corpse and takes it.
Later, they encounter several royal guards, one of whom magically binds the ring to a party member, restoring sunlight to the sky. In terror, they take the party to the kingdom, where it is revealed that the ring belonged to the late Princess Shua.
King Altis considers this a 'smoking gun' in the unsolved murder case, and gives the party one year to prove their innocence, or be executed. The royal guard, close friends of Shua while she was alive, seek to help the party find the true culprit and clear their names.

Structures known as Babel Towers have been constructed that allow mortals to cross, still alive, into the afterlife. The party members, each for their own reasons, seek to travel into the afterlife.
Upon reaching the afterlife, the party journeys through many realms and meet deities in charge of difference aspects of the world, known as Echoes. As they journey, however, they gradually discover that someone is acting outside of the Echoes' vision, and both the mortal and eternal planes are in danger.

The party plays a card game on a stranger on a train, which places them in a time loop. Everytime they are killed, the loop resets; they never live longer than three days, as an all-consuming darkness inevitably ends them and the rest of the world. The four party members are tasked with finding and killing four other people also aware of the time loop in order to save the world and break the loop. They must wrestle with whether or not they will allow themselves to take the lives of others for the greater good.
